| Resumo: | [EN] The contemporary, exposed-concrete buildings of OMA’s Qatar National Library and the library of the Rogelio Salmona Cultural Center of the University of Caldas would seem to take the form of the spatial illusion devices that were developed instrumentally during the 17th century in Europe. This reveals how today, surreptitiously, these buildings simultaneously inhabit other times, processes and architectures, which have increased in sophistication and been reinvented by means of bold spatial and structural layouts, encouraging visitors to move around while they pass through perspective manipulations of scale and urban impact. Just as these projects are authentic, in-situ trompe l’oeils that can be navigated and inhabited, so the associations, equivalences and contrasts that they generate with other architectures make them mnemonic, architectural trompe-l’oeils. This brings to light contemporary architectural values, replacing the literal with the literary, and by doing so entering and breaking the ‘core’ of the ‘rules’ of the architectures used as inspiration, thus updating them for the present day. Similarly, the importance of the material used in the buildings –exposed concrete–, and the materiality of the elements that comprise them is clear, inasmuch as they bring reality and illusion together in a structure that allows the architectural event to be transformed into matter, where those who occupy these architectures feel both enveloped by reality and liberated from it at the same time. Architecture becomes a real and ideal vision of the impossible. |
