Sumario:Adult flies of Drosophila melanogaster have an epidermis which is produced from groups of cells which become distinct from those of the blastoderm, early in embryo development. Two types of cell groups are involved. The first, imaginai disks, give rise to most adult structures (imago is the technical term for the adult fly, hence imaginai disks). The second, histoblast nests, develop into the dorsal epidermis (tergites) and ventral epidermis (sternites) of the abdomen. There are a number of imaginai disks, each of which generates a characteristic adult structure. Each disk consists of a single layer of cells which forms a sac, connected to the larval epidermis by a stalk. The cells of the imaginai disks divide continuously during larval development. For example, the imaginai disk which in Drosophila gives rise to a wing, develops from a few cells until, at maturity, it contains about 50000 cells. At metamorphosis, the disks evaginate, expand, and substitute for the larval epidermis, which undergoes programmed death. In contrast, the histoblast nests, groups of cells within the larval epidermis, remain quiescent during larval development and do not start to proliferate until metamorphosis, giving rise to the about 4500 cells in each hemitergite or 3000 cells in each hemisternite. Like the imaginai disks, each histoblast nest only gives rise to structures on the left- or right-hand side of a segment, hence each tergite or sternite is produced in two halves (hermitergites and hemisternites).
