Descripción
Sumario:This article deals with the way Javier Marías treats the genre of the portrait in Miramientos (1997). The author describes two or more photographs of various Hispanic writers (including himself) at different moments of their lives. Attending to the metaphoric condition of language, he uses constant similes, fictitious passages of an analogical nature, and considers the possible lives that the faces suggest to him. Furthermore, he locates the portrayed writers in time by comparing their successive images. The result consists in an ethical and sympathetic perception of the personalities, in the best novelistic tradition, including an element of humor.
