Lima-Perú 1990-2020Art, architecture, and utopia in the neoliberal era. Lima-Peru 1990-2020Guerra Muente, MartínArtArchitectureCityNeoliberalismUtopiaArteArquitecturaCiudadNeoliberalismoUtopíaCDU::7 Bellas artesThis article explores the relationships between art and architecture that, in recent years, various Peruvian artists have been developing as part of their professional practice. The analysis first proposes a reading of the relationship between art, architecture, and neoliberalism through the constant presence of certain materials that would speak to self-construction and precarious housing. Self-construction, in this sense, was seen more as a virtuous solution rather than –as it apparently was– a consequence of the absence of public housing policies. This is where the formal dimension of materials has gained ground over more political and social reflections, sidelining what could explain the proliferation of certain typologies used in the art world. Secondly, the article proposes a reading of utopia that could be a way out of the impasse in which art has found itself in recent years: between modernist utopia and popular utopia.
