| Sumario: | [EN] Letter from the Director: The Center for Biological Research, part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), was founded in 1953 to bring together research groups belonging to different institutes and sections, with the vision and the mission of creating a modern biology center. The original lines of research in Microbiology, Enzymology, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Neurology, Developmental Biology, etc., with the frequent leadership of scientists trained in foreign laboratories, were complemented with lines in Agricultural Sciences, Plant Biology, Immunology, Structural Biology, Biotechnology and, more recently, Biological Chemistry, increasing the distinctive, multidisciplinary character of the Center since its foundation. In the biennium that this report collects, we have had the honor of recognizing the connection and brilliant career of one of the pioneering scientist of the CIB, Margarita Salas, who began her long career at the center that now proudly bears her name. This multidisciplinary nature, above mentioned, has not always been well understood or explained. However, it is essential to solve many of the current scientific issues, whose complexity require conceptual and methodological input from different research fields. The health emergency caused by the COVID-19, certainly a situation that marks the biennium covered by this scientific report, has shown a good evidence of that. Although our work has been impaired by the pandemic, the CIB Margarita Salas staff has not resigned and has reacted, not only to maintain the Center’s previous research activity, but also to respond to the pandemic. During this period, our research capacity has been adapted, obtaining grants to develop 19 projects to learn more, and potentially combat the COVID-19, including one of the three CSIC vaccine projects. And also to rigorously inform to the society, a positive response of social responsibility of research based on the multidisciplinary nature of the Center. Most of these projects have been articulated in the Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform (ITP) “Global Health”, an excellent initiative by the CSIC to value the multidisciplinary nature of our organization. The CIB Margarita Salas has not only been active in the ITP “Global Health”, but also has a very important role in the ITP “Susplast”, coordinated by a researcher at the Center, which pursues the circular economy of plastics. Beyond these topics, other CIB groups, with a broad and transversal vision, seek to tackle other problems of Biomedicine (cancer, rare diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, aging, etc.), and Biotechnology (pest control, plant improvement, waste harvesting, etc.), based, of course, on the basic knowledge generated in fields of Cell Biology, Structural Biology, Synthetic Biology, Biological Chemistry, etc. The activity of the last two years included in this report has been carried out by the staff of the center, around 450 people including researchers in the various stages of their career (from end-of-degree work to Ad Honorem researchers) as well as professionals responsible for the administration and maintenance of the Center. Beyond the funding, obtained from competitive calls from agencies, both Spanish and international, our specialized Scientific Facilities and its highly qualified technical staff, are another essential aspect for the development of our research activity. The facilities support not only the Center’s projects, but also other research centers, universities and companies. We have an excellent library, with one of the most important bibliographic funds in Europe in the field of Biology and Biomedicine, and receive essential support to research through Management and Technical Services. The researchers of the Center are well aware of the need to transfer our work to the society, not only in the form of specialized scientific publications. Our focus on training the future generation of researchers through the direction of Doctoral Thesis, has been expanded to undergraduate and master’s students, particularly through the organization and important participation in the Master in Molecular and Cellular Integrative Biology and the Master in Pandemics, both coordinated by the CSIC and the International University Menéndez Pelayo. The participation of the CIB staff in science outreach activities to the general public is very active, despite the need to adapt their format due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. And we also pursue the transfer of the generated knowledge in the form of useful products and services, to solve social needs, in addition to create spin-off companies. Again, a strong commitment to social responsibility of research. The reflection on the future CIB Margarita Salas, has led us to coin the motto “Biology for the Global Well-being”, which summarizes in an inclusive way our research lines, the potential of our multidisciplinary approach, and, more importantly, our commitment to contribute through the generation of knowledge to solve the problems that society has raised. [ES] Carta del Director : El Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB) del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) se creó en 1953 para reunir a grupos de investigación pertenecientes a diferentes institutos y secciones, con la visión y la misión de crear un centro de biología moderno. A las líneas originales de investigación en Microbiología, Enzimología, Endocrinología, Metabolismo, Neurología, etc., con el liderazgo frecuente de investigadores e investigadoras con experiencia en laboratorios extranjeros, se les fueron sumando líneas en Biología Molecular, Biología del Desarrollo, Ciencias Agrarias, Biología Vegetal, Inmunología, Biología Estructural, Biotecnología y, más recientemente, Química Biológica, aumentando el carácter multidisciplinar distintivo del Centro desde su fundación. En el bienio que recoge esta memoria hemos tenido el honor de reconocer la vinculación y la brillante trayectoria de una de las científicas pioneras del CIB, Margarita Salas, que inició su larga carrera en el Centro que ahora lleva su nombre para el recuerdo. El carácter multidisciplinar, arriba referido, no siempre ha sido bien entendido ni explicado. Sin embargo, resulta esencial para resolver muchas de las cuestiones científicas actuales, que por su complejidad requieren la aportación conceptual y metodológica desde diferentes campos de investigación. La emergencia sanitaria causada por la COVID-19, sin duda una situación que ha marcado el bienio que cubre esta memoria, ha dado buena prueba de ello. Aunque ha dificultado enormemente nuestro trabajo, el personal del CIB Margarita Salas no se ha resignado y ha reaccionado, no solo para mantener activa la actividad investigadora previa del Centro, sino para dar una respuesta a la pandemia. Durante este periodo se ha adaptado nuestra capacidad investigadora logrando la financiación de 19 proyectos para conocer mejor y, potencialmente, combatir la COVID-19, incluyendo uno de los tres proyectos de vacuna del CSIC. Y ello sin descuidar la información rigurosa a la sociedad, una respuesta positiva de responsabilidad social de la investigación basada en el carácter multidisciplinar del Centro. La mayoría de estos proyectos se han articulado en la Plataforma Temática Interdisciplinar (PTI) “Salud Global”, una excelente iniciativa del CSIC para poner en valor el carácter multidisciplinar de nuestra organización. El CIB Margarita Salas no ha sido solo activo en la PTI “Salud Global”, sino que también tiene un muy importante papel en la PTI “Susplast”, coordinada por una investigadora del Centro, que persigue la economía circular de los plásticos. Más allá de estos temas, otros grupos del Centro, con una visión amplia y transversal, persiguen dar respuesta a otros problemas en el contexto de la Biomedicina (cáncer, enfermedades raras, enfermedades neurodegenerativas, envejecimiento, etc.), y la Biotecnología (control de plagas, mejora vegetal, aprovechamiento de residuos, etc.), basándose, como no puede ser de otra manera, en el conocimiento básico generado en campos de la Biología Celular, la Biología Estructural, la Biología Sintética, la Química Biológica, etc. La actividad de los dos últimos años recogida en esta memoria se ha realizado por el personal del centro, unas 450 personas incluyendo tanto investigadores en las diversas etapas de su carrera (de trabajos de fin de Grado a investigadores Ad Honorem) como profesionales responsables de la administración y el mantenimiento del Centro. Además de la financiación para nuestros proyectos, obtenida de convocatorias competitivas de agencias de investigación, tanto españolas como internacionales, otro aspecto esencial para el desarrollo de nuestra actividad investigadora son los Servicios Científicos especializados y su personal técnico altamente cualificado. Dichos servicios prestan apoyo no solo a los proyectos del Centro, sino también a otros centros de investigación, universidades y empresas. Contamos con una excelente biblioteca, con uno de los fondos bibliográficos más importantes de Europa en el ámbito de la Biología y Biomedicina, así como un apoyo esencial a la investigación a través de los Servicios de Gerencia y del Servicio Técnico. Los investigadores del Centro somos muy conscientes de la necesidad de trasladar nuestro trabajo a la sociedad que nos financia, no solo en forma de publicaciones científicas especializadas. Nuestra actividad formadora de futuros investigadores a través de la dirección de Tesis Doctorales, se ha ido ampliando a alumnos de grado y máster, particularmente a través de la organización e importante participación en el Máster en Biología Molecular y Celular Integrativa y el Máster en Pandemias, ambos coordinados por el CSIC y la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo. La participación de investigadores del Centro en actividades de divulgación de la ciencia al público en general es muy activa, aunque ha tenido que cambiar su formato debido a las restricciones impuestas por la pandemia. Y también perseguimos la transferencia del conocimiento generado en forma de productos y servicios útiles para solucionar necesidades sociales, así como la creación de empresas de base tecnológica. De nuevo, un fuerte compromiso de responsabilidad social de la investigación. La reflexión sobre el futuro CIB Margarita Salas nos ha llevado a acuñar el lema “Biología para el Bienestar Global”, que resume de una forma inclusiva nuestras líneas de investigación, nuestro potencial de abordaje multidisciplinar y, lo que es más importante, nuestro compromiso de contribuir desde la generación de conocimiento a la resolución de los problemas que la sociedad tiene planteados. |
