Rainey, who has decisively contributed to the problem of Akkadian written in those regions where it co-existed with other spoken native languages, namely those belonging to the West Semitic family. These often called "barbarised" Akkadian dialects are rather well attested during the Late Bronze Age, a time when Babylonian represented the cultural language jpar excellence in the Near East and evinced a remarkably widespread diffusion, reaching its westernmost border.
