Descripción
Sumario:The question of the works of mercy, affected by the Protestant doctrine of justification by faith alone, is raised in a non-uniform way by Spanish religious dissidents. In this diversity, it is necessary to consider the temporal and doctrinal variation, as well as the multiplicity of social groups and networks in which they are inserted. In order to study the issue, texts by many of them (Juan de Valdés, Francisco de Enzinas, Juan Díaz, Juan Pérez de Pineda, Antonio del Corro, Casiodoro de Reina) are selected and analyzed, which allow one to observe the different sensibilities that coexist. Finally, on the Catholic side, the case of Bartolomé Carranza de Miranda is selected to show how this debate on the works of mercy conditioned a nuanced and somewhat novel response.
