| Sumario: | This contribution deals with the architectural study of the reformation of the church of San Benito Abad in Agudo, Ciudad real, based on a 17th -century drawing. This building is the result of the extension of the original 16th-century temple, whose construction was completed over three centuries. The first project was modified and influenced by various architectural styles, which are still recognizable on the wall coverings of the temple. This essay shows the laborious work carried out on archives which were widely dispersed and almost nonexistent in relation to the church. They have been compiled and analyzed for this purpose. Additionally, traces and fragments have been analyzed throughout our research, showing a relation between the actual building and the afore mentioned documentary sources. Thus, the hypothesis of the chronological order of the temple can be established. One of the documents of greatest interest has been the 17th- century blueprint by maestrode Piña, which includes the singular outline of the «montea» that, in turn, allows the analysisof the geometry of the ribbed vault. Furthermore, the on-site investigation has led to the discovery of a cross vault, which was hidden in the transept of the church and is akin to the one that is drawn. The existence of this vault was practically unknown and it was not documented, as it was currently hidden due to the 18th-century forceful intervention. This research is the first approximation to this late gothic vault, whose geometric style has been thoroughly reproduced in detail thanks to the immersion in the architectural production of the Medieval Period alongside the comparative analysis of similar architectural examples, which were built during the same period in the region of Campo de Calatrava. |
