| Sumario: | This work aims to analyse the modern delimitation of the Spanish-Portuguese Border in the Dehesa de la Contienda, an area subject to a centuries-old dispute which was not solved until a specific border agreement signed in 1893. Since the thirteenth century, this territory located between the border of Spain and Portugal was disputed by the Spanish towns of Aroche and Encinasola and the Portuguese town of Moura. In 1542, the three localities concluded a first agreement, called “La Concordata”, in order to share the use of this area. However, until the aforementioned agreement the area was neither divided nor demarcated. In order to understand the border dispute of La Contienda and its final resolution, this chapter develops two key points: firstly, the acquisition of geographical knowledge necessary to inform about the conflict, and secondly, the cartographic representations that the Joint Boundary Commission developed to delimit this part of the border. This chapter also addresses the reasons, issues, controversies and final solutions adopted in this area of the border to further understanding of the Commission’s phases and conclusions. |
