Sumario:This work reconstructs the process of formation of the community of the colonial Jujuy, delving into the role played by religion. To this end, we explore the trajectory of the Tarija Pablo Bernardez de Ovando, a major landowner that accumulated titles, mercedes of lands and a "encomienda" that would end up constituting the marquissate of Tojo. We are interested in going over his particular trayectory since his condition as a foreigner will allow us to investigate which formalized and non-formalized practices assisted him in acquiring his status of citizen and will also give us an approach into jurisdictional cultures typical of pre-contemporary societies. We consider religion to have played a key role in that process since his formation of a vicinity was, among other aspects, settled in a judicial process between the Archbishopric of Charcas and the Bishopric of Tucumán over payment of tithes, in which Ovando was excommunicated by the Archbishopric.
