Descripción
Sumario:Self-employment has been stimulated over recent years by supportive policies in many European countries. Accordingly, this topic has received a renewed interest in academic research. In this paper the main characteristics of self-employment in Catalonia are analysed and compared to Spain and other selected European Union countries. Data for this study is mainly extracted from the Labour Force Survey and we focus on self-employed with less than 11 employees. Overall, results show that self-employed in micro enterprises located in sectors such as construction, trade, transport, hotels and restaurants have a very low level of education and that their employment status seems to derive from a lack of alternative employment opportunities.
