Descripción
Sumario:As the European Parliament has been urging the inclusion of media literacy in the curricula, a team of Spanish researchers have worked to find out the degree of media competence of the citizens. The results are disturbing. They highlight a great deficiency of this knowledge: of media languages, ideology and values, production distribution, reception and interac-tion processes, and finally, in the aesthetic dimension. Outstanding results are only found in the technological matters. A lack of understanding of the mental processes that take part in the emotional and unconscious mechanisms are also found. On the other hand, even if the level of participation in this field has been growing , it’s still far from the optimum feedback required in the contemporary digital context. These findings should encourage the educational institutions to guarantee citizens an education on media competence.
