| Resumo: | In this research we explain how the French literature written in the Middle Ages uses the relationship between the Jacobean pilgrimage and the transgression of the law and its punishment. The legal aspects addressed as well as the different genres in which this topic appears is highly remarkable. The pilgrim’s legal status, the crimes committed on the way to Compostela and the sentences imposed on the perpetrators constitute a field worth of attention and analysis. These topics belong to a kind of literature in which they are not only of paramount importance, but also recurring in the literary works written during more than three centuries. This feature seems somewhat contradictory; however, it is precisely a distinguishing one which justifies the relevance of this study. |
