However, the systematic study of the marine environment is subject to strong constraints that limit its development, including the extent and accessibility of some study areas, weather, time and space scales and high operating costs. In the last two decades, great efforts have been made to achieve a multiscale temporal and spatial vision of the sea, but this work has only just begun. The number of measured parameters and the temporal and spatial sampling frequency must be increased, and they must be made synoptic along multiple scales. Important advances in the manufacture of sensors and the gradual automation of some sampling platforms (smart buoys, drifters, gliders and autonomous surface and submarine vehicles) mark the way towards this goal, and these resources are being used increasingly in marine research (Di Caccio and Troisi 2021). […][ES] Las ciencias marinas y la observación de los océanos son claves en el camino hacia un futuro sostenible. No obstante, el estudio sistemático del ámbito marino tiene fuertes condicionantes que limitan fuertemente su desarrollo: la extensión y accesibilidad de algunas áreas de estudio, la meteorología, las escalas temporales y espaciales, los elevados costes operacionales, etc. En las dos últimas décadas se han hecho importantes esfuerzos para conseguir una visión multiescala (tanto temporal como espacial) del mar, pero es un camino que apenas ha comenzado. Es necesario incrementar el número de parámetros medidos, la frecuencia temporal y espacial de los muestreos, así como hacerlos sinópticos a lo largo de múltiples escalas. Los avances en la fabricación de sensores y la automatización paulatina de alguna de las plataformas de muestreo (boyas inteligentes, drifters, gliders, vehículos autónomos de superficie y submarinos) marcan el camino hacia este objetivo y su utilización está cada vez más extendida en el ámbito de la investigación marina (Di Caccio et al. 2021).
