Sumario:In Spain, sport for people with disability has never been as recognized as today. The area within the sports sciences that deals with this topic is Adapted Physical Activity (AFA), which includes the adapted sports. This article examines the area, its historical development, and its main features as an area of knowledge and professional development, contextualized within the current classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (WHO, 2001). Moreover, the evolution of international research topics regarding AFA is analyzed, highlighting the main trends. Further, the main lines of current research at the national level are indicated. The authors present a series of concrete proposals to promote the development of AFA as a multidisciplinary field of study and a professional discipline. The article suggests specific guidelines for the proper methodological research development of sports for people with disabilities and likewise details the most important educational activities and scientific dissemination forums for the subject. Suggestions for promoting knowledge and multidisciplinary collaboration are indicated throughout the text to further advance the development of AFA in our country
