| Sumario: | The study constitutes an overview of varied contributions by Meléndez Valdés to Enlightenment culture, not only literary texts but also works concerning legal issues and care of the poor. Las bodas de Camacho, el rico, the author’s only dramatic work, is viewed in terms of his friendship with Jovellanos. The pastoral drama obeying neoclassical norms provoked opposition as well as admiration. Meléndez’s letters reveal the significance of friendship for him, while the fragment of the Cartas turcas illustrates his desire to experiment. A comparison of prologues to editions of poetry (1785 and 1820) brings out increasing self-confidence, while entry into the Real Academia Española (1810) evidenced his official recognition. More substantial coverage is given to the analysis of legal texts which demonstrate Meléndez’s humanism while not transgressing contemporary legal practice, while his efforts to reform institutions for the poor in Ávila illustrate clerical obscurantism and self-interest clashing with humanitarian principles./n |
