Sumario:Family-owned businesses have been an object of study for decades. Likewise, family protocols and their usefulness for these enterprises have been the subject of research, especially in hispanic countries where their application is widely spread. However, there are no studies on family protocols and conflict management in Peru to date. The lack of research in these areas and my own 30 year experience as family business consultant led me to choose this topic as an object of research. My study is a qualitative, exploratory, non-experimental research using a "snow ball effect" technique. The object of these investigation is the study of the usefulness of family protocols for conflict management from the perspective of family members that work in family businesses. The main question posed is ¿How does a family protocol contribute to the management of conflicts in family-owned bussinesses in Peru and what is its usefulness? Thus , I have established two propositions. First, the family protocol constributes significantly to the resolution and prevention of conflicts. Second, the usefulness of a family protocol depends on the degree of intemalization of such a protocol by the family. In order to achieve my objectives 1 conducted a study of 11 family-owned businesses branded as 'big-businesses ' by peruvian legislation. After interviewing at least 2 members of each family, the data obtained was processed using NV1VO software (version 11Pro) as my main analytical tool supported by SPSS (version 22). The findings allowed the identification and analysis of 15 nodes that affect the protocol. The final result showed that the family protocol, contrary to what is suggested by theory, is useful towards the prevention of conflicts but not for their resolution. Furthermore, there e.iQst circumstances that can enhance the usefulness of the family protocal in family-owned businesses. Finally, 1 present a comprehensiw model (with supporting material) that shows in detall the factors that mus 1 be taken into account by family businesses in order to maximize the benefits of the protocol both for the business and for family relations. Also, as a result of this investigation several subjects have been detected that merit further analysis and research
