The Gran Chaco in the 18th century is the object of Study, as it was portrayed as a frontier region both in the colonial times and after the republics of the American South Cone gained their independence. Four axes organize this research: indigenous diversity, the implementation of the urban model in colonial areas, conflicts, and the settlement of indigenous populations in missions. After intense research in archives in Spain, Portugal and Argentina and analysis of documents from the local, provincial, regional and State levels, the Chaco frontiers appear as dynamic areas of social, political, cultural and commercial interactions that favored processes of civilization (the way Hispanization was understood at that time) of indigenous peoples and indianization of Europeans; also, cross-border mobility was intense, and cultural hybridity between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples was common.RESUMEN: Esta investigación aborda el estudio de las fronteras americanas entendidas como espacios geográficos y sociales porosos y dinámicos, caracterizados por las interacciones violentas y pacíficas entre poblaciones indígenas y no indígenas. El estudio se plantea desde un enfoque multidisciplinar para reconstruir la semántica de una frontera interior del imperio español, en concreto, la frontera del Chaco, que las narrativas de época colonial retrataron como una frontera de carácter hostil, al igual que hicieron las de época independiente. En cuanto al marco cronológico, la perspectiva temporal atiende fundamentalmente al siglo XVIII, un tiempo de cambio en las relaciones hispano-indígenas debido a la puesta en marcha de la guerra ofensiva contra el Chaco y al establecimiento de las primeras misiones estables. El corpus documental utilizado es ampliamente heterogéneo, habiéndose consultado fuentes de los niveles local, provincial, regional y estatal en archivos de tres países: España, Portugal y Argentina.
