Sumario:[EN]The city in which St. Teresa was born ancl livecl was not, accorcling to the patterns of the time, either small, or excessively noble or religious, but -in acldition to lower nobility and clerics- it had an active bourgeoisie. Here we analyse certain representative personages related to St. Teresa, as well as sorne characteristics of the city that can help us better to understand our Saint: its boncls with the rural milieu. the acceptable cultural leve! of its population, the discrimination of women, and the issue of "racial purity» or «clean blood».
