Descripción
Sumario:[eng] Status of the breeding population of European Bee-eater Merops apiaster in the Balearic Islands. There are breeding records of European Bee-eater Merops apiaster on all four of the main islands of the Balearic Archipelago. Both Majorca and Minorca show a decline in their breeding populations. The species has never seemed to be very abundant on Ibiza and Formentera, but in truth the breeding populations of these islands are poorly known. In this study we have made an exhaustive study of the distribution and abundance of the European Bee-eater on the Pityusic Islands through the collection of historical records and a complete censos from 2022. Of the 56 locations where breeding has ocurred on Ibiza, only 4 were found to be active during the 2022 census with a total of 8 breeding pairs. On Formentera we found 4 breeding locations for the species none of which are currently active. The population of European Bee-eater on the Pityusic Islands therefore appears to be in a critical situation, having gone extinct on Formentera and being drastically reduced on Ibiza. Unfortunately, the causes for said decline remain a mystery and so it is impossible to suggest conservation measures which would allow a recovery.
