Particularly, depending on their morphological characteristics, they can show third-order susceptibilities with extremely large values which makes them very attractive for optical switching, among other applications. During the talk we will briefly review the fundamental mechanisms responsible for the third order non-linear response of these artificially structured materials as well as the experimental techniques allowing to measure their third order susceptibility. In the second part of the talk we will provide illustrative examples of the dependence of the non-linear susceptibility and its temporal and spectral evolution as a function of different parameters that can be controlled during the synthesis process. The results will be taken from a real system: Cu:Al2O3 thin film nanocomposites synthesized by pulsed laser deposition. As a general conclusion it will be shown that in real systems, the comprehension of the relation between the meso- and nano-scopic morphology of the composites and their effective non-linear susceptibility is a key issue for the design of high performance materials.Los nanocompuestos formados por nanocristales metálicos embebidos en matrices aislantes son materiales artificiales cuyas propiedades difieren notablemente de las que caracterizan a los correspondientes materiales masivos. Dependiendo de sus características morfológicas, estos materiales pueden presentar elevadísimas susceptibilidades ópticas no lineales de tercer orden, lo que los hace muy atractivos para el desarrollo, entre otras, de aplicaciones en conmutación óptica. Durante el seminario se revisarán brevemente los mecanismos físicos responsables de la respuesta no-lineal de estos materiales así como algunas de las técnicas experimentales que permiten determinar la susceptibilidad óptica no-lineal de tercer orden. En la segunda parte del seminario se presentarán diferentes ejemplos ilustrativos de la dependencia de este parámetro respecto a las condiciones de preparación del material en un sistema real, nanocompuestos de Cu:Al2O3 en lámina delgada producidos por depósito con láser pulsado.
