| Sumario: | The historic center of Girona, known as Barri Vell, is celebrated for its rich historical and artistic heritage, which has transformed it into the city's most popular tourist area over time. However, despite its touristic appeal, Barri Vell remains a vibrant neighborhood where a variety of social groups coexist, including residents, students, and shopkeepers. This human coexistence can sometimes lead to conflicts, particularly due to the pressures of tourism. In recent months, protests have erupted in Girona advocating for the preservation of the local identity and authenticity of Barri Vell, while opposing the negative impacts of mass tourism, such as rising living costs and, in some cases, the displacement of long-term residents. This thesis aims to explore the phenomenon of tourism in Girona’s Barri Vell. Given the profound effects tourism has on the urban landscape and the lives of its inhabitants, this work seeks to examine the everyday experiences of both residents and tourists, focusing on their interactions with the city, their movement patterns, and the ways in which their daily habits unfold within the urban environment. Additionally, the thesis investigates the ground-floor spaces of Barri Vell, where much of the neighbourhood's everyday life takes place. By analysing these spaces and the businesses that occupy them, the study offers an in-depth look at the commercial fabric of Barri Vell and its relationship with tourism. |
