Sumario:The Late Roman Empire is one of the most exciting periods in his­tory, so it's important its stLidy and knowledge as a way to Linderstand better sorne of the problems that still arise nowadays, as well as to raise sorne solLitions. Logically when someone analyze a legal institLition, he mList do it on the legal soLirces that have SLirvived. BLit its fragmentary natLire and the possible interpolations make necessary an analysis of the mLiltiple references that have been conserved in other types of soLirces, SLICh as literary soLirces. In this respect, the works of one of the most important thinkers and phi­losophers of all time, as was Saint ALigstin, constitLite an immense soLirce that can help LIS to know how it was the real development of nLimeroLis sitLiations regLilated by the later roman law. Precisely, his correspondence will help LIS to Linderstand the varioLis vicissitLides that arase along a procedLire, and how the bishops assLimed an important role to protect and defend the interests of their "flock", not only throLigh the "episcopalis aLidientia", bLit also mediating befare the competent civil aLithorities, especially in fiscal processes
