Through a few specific examples of my own personal research, I aim to show how following the individual networks and clusters of translators and collectors of Qur’ans help us understand the circulation and uses of the Muslim Holy Book in Europe. The essay argues that these examples (and many similar and at the same time very different ones), which imply polemics, evangelization, erudite knowledge, and collaboration with European Muslims and Muslims converts, illustrate and at the same time enlarge our concept of “reception.”This essay is part of the project “The European Qur’an: Islamic Scripture in European Culture and Religion 1150–1850,” which received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (SyG grant agreement no. 810141).Peer reviewedUniversity of Chicago PressEuropean CommissionGarcía-Arenal, Mercedes [0000-0001-9592-3585]Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]202320232023info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/309708reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
