Descripción
Sumario:The coinages of Latin colonies, due to their marginal character, have often been considered subsidiaries or imitational of the Roman issues, if not even a sign of a fault in Roman control. A better assessment of these perspectives is offered by the analysis of two case-coinages, those of Hatria and Firmum Picenum: this paper presents the catalogue and analysis of the coins issued by these colonies in the years immediately following their deduction, examined within a broad historical and archaeological context. For the colonies in Picenum, as for other Latin colonial communities, coins were both an economic and a cultural phenomenon, and their accurate study contributes to a better reconstruction of the political and social structures of the communities by which the coins were produced.
