Descripción
Sumario:[EN] This study examines the sgraffito decorative technique used in the Baroque architecture of the Chapel of Santa Bárbara in the Church of San Juan del Hospital (Valencia). It analyses the technical and stylistic features of the sgraffito patterns and explores their symbolic and aesthetic meaning within the Baroque context. The results identify a repertory of common geometric and vegetal motifs—circles, rhombi and stylised flowers—also found in other religious buildings of the period. These designs are consistent with late-seventeenth-century artistic trends, particularly in the second half of the century, when Baroque decoration became more standardised and laden with symbolic content. Overall, the sgraffito of the Chapel of Santa Bárbara stands out as a significant example of the artistic and ideological synthesis of Baroque Valencia.
