| Sumario: | Ukraine is rich in raw materials, not only those that were relevant for the first industrial revolution, i.¿e., iron ore and coal, especially in the Donbas region, but also in non-ferrous metals and, in battery-related minerals, particularly lithium, which is of outstanding importance for the modern economy, especially a green economy. After an introduction into the general economic development of Ukraine, the article analyses the Ukrainian industry, energy, and resource base in general and then focusses on the economic potentials of these ¿green¿ resources that will be important for the decarbonization of Western industrialized countries. The article concludes that Russia¿s invasion of Ukraine was also driven by economic interests. Russia has so far been able to exert influence through its position as a supplier of fossil fuels. Given the potentially large lithium deposits in Ukraine, Russia¿s goal seems to be to gain access to materials that are of great importance for the decarbonization of Western countries |
