Located in a climatically sensitive region stronglyinfluenced by the westerly winds of the Southern Hemisphere, these temperateicefields offer a unique opportunity to study the effects of climate change on glacierdynamics, glacier-lake interactions and related processes. By combining highresolutionremote sensing, aerial photogrammetry, field observations and stableisotope analyses, the research reconstructs the recent glaciological history of the regionand reveals the mechanisms driving current cryospheric change. The study begins with a comprehensive glacial geomorphological mapping effortcovering an area of more than 13,000 km2, identifying more than 11,500 landforms. These features, including trimlines, moraines and glacial lake basins, serve as indicators of glacial fluctuations during the Holocene and demonstrate the glacial heritage of theregion. This mapping forms the basis for analysing landscape evolution and thetransition from glacier-dominated terrain to lake-dominated foreland.Multi-temporal satellite images and historical aerial photographs are used to quantifythe distribution and extent of glacial lakes since the mid-20th century. The researchdocuments a clear shift from predominantly ice-dammed to moraine-dammed lakesand shows how glacier retreat has changed the regional hydrology. Newly identifiedglacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), including the southernmost recorded events inSouth America, demonstrate the cascading nature of lake drainage events and theirdiverse mechanisms.A detailed case study of the Glaciar Roncagli system illustrates how glacier mass lossand frontal retreat contribute to the weakening of ice dams and the occurrence ofalmost annual outflow events from ice-dammed lakes such as Lago Mateo Martinic. Thisexample emphasises the dynamic feedbacks between lake expansion, glacier instabilityand abrupt hydrological dynamics, and provides insights into the physical processescontrolling cyclic outflows. To better constrain the climatic drivers of these changes, the project explores thesnowpack and accumulation processes in the little-studied upper parts of the CordilleraDarwin Icefield. Field data from snowpits and measurements of stable water isotopesprovide important information on snowfall patterns and post-deposition processes, andcomplement the recent firn core records.By integrating geomorphology, glaciology and climate science, this work provides newinsights into the physical and climatic processes that characterise one of the mostremote and rapidly changing cryospheric regions on Earth. It makes a valuablecontribution to understanding the future of temperate icefields in the face of ongoingclimate changeAntigüedad Auzmendi, IgnacioFaria, Sergio Henrique2026202620252025info:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10810/78514reponame:Addi.
