Sumario:History as a scientific activity was improved by the Enlightenment in 18th century Europe. The Spanish historians of the second half of this century were also influenced by the official environment, which was promoting an apologetic reinterpretation of the Spanish history, in order to face the attacks of foreign writers. But, at the same time, there was some criticism of the Hispanic past. The military took part of this movement. This paper is studying this duality through the historical work of the multifaceted naval officer José de Vargas y Ponce (1760-1821), a member of this historical school, through his view of Spanish Marine from the Antiquity and specially his analysis of the Spanish Navy of his time.
