Este artículo está sujeto a una licencia CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.[EN] After touching on the problem of a precise date for the architecture in question, which is vital for any historical interpretation, I discuss a number of parameters for a social analysis, starting with their “appeal”, able to produce a scenario adorned by specific “narrations”. Scenes and narrations mostly relating to religion (relics of saints whose deeds are described in the Legendary Lives, inscriptions, and depictions of their lives and miracles), but which were also expressed in the monumental architecture that attested to the prestige of the people who had built them. In the second part, I present three examples of monumental architecture which, being mentioned in the written sources, can be attributed to actual individuals, and whose aims, social context and actions as benefactors can be explored. The first is Gauslino, a fidelis of Emperor Otto I, who chose him in 964 as bishop of Padua, and his ambitious project, based on inventiones of saints connected to religious architecture of the past, to restore to the episcopate – and thus also to the city – its lost prestige and lost role. The second outlines the strategies of some senior officials of the Empire, in particular the Obertenghi dynasty, in whose 11th century constructions one sees the aim of promoting a personal and dynastic power in the lower Adige. The third dwells on the the social dynamics in the central Alpine sector between the 12th and 13th centuries; protagonists in these are bishops, abbots, vassals and communities, and they find their expression in the flourishing of castles, the subject of power clashes and mediation. Finally, in the conclusions, I underline the limitations of an analysis that is overly influenced by the gaps in our knowledge of the material culture and economic and social context of the period in question.Peer reviewedEdizioni All'Insegna del GiglioEuropean Research Council202320232021info:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501Publisher's versioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionhttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/334640reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
