Sumario:[EN] Most of the recent comparative studies related to the development of the Welfare State in Europe have dealt with the situation in liberal democracies. The case of policy, most probably because it was under Franco's rule for a period of nearly 40 years. The article identifies similarities and differences in the building up of a system of provision of social welfare in modern Spain in comparison with other European democracies. The analysis of it's main features serves the purpose of characterising the model of social welfare in Spain at the turn of the millennium. This faces a three-fold challenge: the articulation of late-corporatist practices, the fulfilment of its decentralising programme, and the establishment of new mixed relationships among state, market and altruist associations.
