| Sumario: | The aim of this paper is to assess whether the evolution of the global value chains (GVCs) in which the Spanish economy is immersed has contributed to the emission reduc-tion targets or not. To do so, we analyse the evolution between 1995 and 2018 of Spain’s carbon emissions from different perspectives and assess their determinants through a struc-tural decomposition analysis, using an extended multi-regional input-output model. We pay special attention to the impact of the reconfiguration of GVCs, which have shifted from a greater fragmentation and offshoring of production to a slowdown in globalisation and even reshoring of activities. Our results show that the geographical factor of these GVCs has contributed to increasing emissions throughout the period, while the other factors (emissions intensity, level and pattern of demand) have reduced them since 2008 |
