Resumo:The visualization of the relation between atmospheric and oceanic circulation it is too difficult because it occurs in a large scale. Therefore, this study pretends to design a laboratory scale model which allows us to recreate the main characteristics of the general atmospheric and oceanic circulation that is developed on a planetary scale. To design the model, the two main variables that we must take into account are: (a) the Earth’s rotation, and (b) the differential heating (ie the thermal gradient between the equator and the poles). The rotating ocean is simulated by a rotating table, and on its surface there is a circular tank where the water is deposited. The angular velocity of rotation is proportional to the Coriolis acceleration, and it permits us to simulate different latitudes regions of the Earth. Also, the thermal gradient that exists between the poles and the equator, is recreated by ice blocks situated in the center of the tank, the ice simulates the pole. The fluids’ movements are visualized using some different methods (colorants, particles in suspension). The studied situations include experiments of Hadley’s circulation in 2 and 3 dimensions, the extra-tropical circulation, the thermal wind, the baroclinic instability and the generation of fronts
