Chemical Composition and Levels of Concentrations of Aerosols in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean basin is a climate-sensitive region of particular interest for examining atmospheric aerosols and their chemical composition due to the large variety of source regions, contrasting air masses, and mixing processes between anthropogenic emissions, sea salt, and desert dust. Apart fr...

Apart from the major contribution of mineral and desert dust, the coastal urban areas are important sources of anthropogenic aerosols. Systematic measurements of aerosol composition and levels have been conducted across the Mediterranean at urban, rural, background, and remote sites during the last decades. This chapter summarizes the results from several studies and intensive campaigns dealing with systematic monitoring of aerosol concentrations and chemical composition over the Mediterranean, mainly during the last 20 years. The main objectives are to shed light on (i) the particulate matter, carbonaceous-aerosol, inorganic species, and trace-metal concentrations, (ii) the aerosol chemical composition and source apportionment, (iv) the influence of dust on aerosol loading and composition, and (v) to provide a comparison between sites from various parts of the Mediterranean basin. This work was supported by the project “PANhellenic infrastructure for Atmospheric Composition and climatE change” (MIS 5021516), which is implemented under the Action “Reinforcement of the Research and Innovation Infrastructure,” funded by the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” (NSRF 2014–2020) and co-financed by Greece and the European Union (European Regional Development Fund).Peer reviewedSpringer NatureConsejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas [https://ror.org/02gfc7t72]202420242023info:eu-repo/semantics/otherhttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_3248Postprintinfo:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/bookParthttp://hdl.handle.net/10261/358509reponame:DIGITAL.CSIC.
