Descrição
Resumo:The objective of the research was to evaluate how useful is the amylase and serum lipase in the diagnosis and controlof treatment of patients with acute abdominal pancreatic and non-pancreatic pain who attended at NORTHOSPITALHospital in Quito during the period October to December 2015 and had elevated serum amylase and lipaseserum. The variables: age, gender, pathological and family history, reason for consultation, signs and symptoms, laboratory and imaging testing, diagnosis and treatment were obtained from medical records. Tools like: median, frequency, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), ROC curves, t-testfor related and ANOVA samples of a factor were employed in the statistical part of this study. It was evidenced, using required statistical tests, that serum lipase has a higher sensitivity (90.91%) compared to amylase (63.3%sensitivity) for pancreatitis diagnosis. Both biochemical parameters offer a 100% specificity. Serum amylase andlipase are elevated in acute pancreatitis and in other non-pancreatic pathologies; therefore other lab and imagingtest are needed in order to achieve an effective diagnosis.
