Sumario:Knowing the origin and formation of ecotourism as a form of alternative tourism is of interest to postmodern societies. The aim of this article is to review the literature on the conformation of ecotourism, as well as the usual impacts it generates on society and the environment. In order to do so, we have revised the literature in order to know the state of the question in relation to ecotourism. To this end, we have rescued knowledge from different academic sources, ordering them and putting them into value.  The results indicate that the concept is not univocal, but that it has common characteristics and dimensions that give it strength, as well as indicating the multiplicity of positive and negative impacts that this form of alternative tourism generates.  Researchers, students and stakeholders can take this document as a starting point for future case studies on ecotourism.
