This article shows a mixed, descriptive and interpretive investigation, where the causal attribution systems of students and teachers of Secondary Education Institutes are analyzed and differences are explored according to sex, repetition, compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) course and the students´ socioeconomic level; and according to the years of teaching experience, if they teach in ordinary groups or for students with difficulties and according to the socioeconomic level. For this purpose, an ad hoc causal attribution scale and interviews with the participants were used through focus groups with the data obtained from the scales. The results show a strong attribution to student effort and teacher performance by students and teachers that was ratified in the focus groups.El éxito y fracaso escolar guardan relación con la construcción de la realidad por parte de los actores que intervienen en el proceso de enseñanza. Las atribuciones causales pueden ayudar a conocer de qué manera se está construyendo la realidad educativa y social que experimentan los agentes implicados. El presente artículo muestra una investigación mixta, de carácter descriptiva e interpretativa, donde se analizan los sistemas de atribución causal de estudiantes y docentes de Institutos de Educación Secundaria y se exploran diferencias atendiendo al sexo, la repetición, curso de la Enseñanza Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) y el nivel socioeconómico de los estudiantes; y según los años de experiencia docente, si enseñan en grupos ordinarios o destinados a estudiantes con dificultades y según el nivel socioeconómico. Para ello se utilizó una escala de atribución causal ad hoc y entrevistas a los participantes mediante grupos focales con los datos obtenidos de las escalas.
