Sumario:The elderly population has experienced rapid growth, forcing countries to take actions that lead to a healthy aging process. This is because the impact it generates is multidimensional, affecting the elderly, their family and the community to which they belong and differs according to social status. Therefore, it was essential to characterize the socio-demographic, socio-familial and elderly family situation in zone 7 in order to establish its relationship with family functionality so as to generate proposals that would improve living conditions. A descriptive, analytical and cross-sectional study was carried out, where the demographic, socio-familial and elderly family situation in zone 7 was determined, subsequently identifying the relationship between socio-family situation and family functionality. In 2016, the elderly population of zone 7 in Ecuador comprised 99,563 people, of which a sample of 1,146 adults was used and separated into 3 clusters corresponding to the provinces of Loja 395, El Oro 385 and Zamora Chinchipe 366. The sample was taken probabilistically by cluster producing an expected frequency of 50%, confidence interval of 95% and a design defect of 0.1. Stratification of the sample was performed based on criteria such as altitude, rainfall and temperature. Instruments were used to collect data on family plus family functioning. Additionally, to determine the socio-familial risk, the modified Gijón scale was applied. The data collected was processed and analyzed through SPSS-16. To determine the association between the variables, the probabilistic nonparametric chi-square test was used. The results showed that the socio-familial situation of the elderly has a statistically significant association with family functionality. Keywords: Social risk, elderly, functionality, family, Gijón scale.
