Sumario:The events of September 30, described by the author as a coup attempt, have unfolded against a new backdrop: rather than a crisis, what is happening in Ecuador is a process of State “re-founding” and institutional reform. This text reviews both the coincidences and the differences among the three previous coups (Bucaram, 1997; Mahuad, 2000; Gutiérrez, 2005), emphasizing in the analysis of the 30-S coup three elements: a basically corporative protest, an armed uprising synchronized throughout the country and actions intended to destabilize the democratic regime. Finally, the paradoxical relation between the authority and the leadership of President Rafael Correa and the deterioration of the institutionalism of the country are analyzed.
