Sumario:In commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the birth - day of Jorge Juan y Santacilia, the present article reviews  the performance of the eminent Spanish marines and scientists Jorge Juan y Antonio Ulloa during the Franco-Spanish geodesic mission in the 18th century. The mission was in charge of the measurement of the terrestrial meridian in the old Audiencia de Quito. The present article highlights the important work carried out by both naval officers and the particular circumstances of the mission. It also describes the eventualities they went through before returning safe and sound to the Court of Madrid  eleven years after starting their odyssey.
