In order to compile information related to Nacional type cocoa, the following review addresses i) importance of cocoa in Ecuador, ii) germplasm banks and characterization of Nacional type cocoa genotypes, iii) main production areas and iv) recommended materials for the different production areas. A systematic literature search was conducted from 1937 to 2022 in scientific databases such as Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, Latindex. In addition, documents were collected in repositories of national and international universities and research institutes. Descriptive and multivariate statistics were used to analyze the information. The systematic review carried out allows concluding that: i) the genetic resources of this type of cocoa are very important for the cocoa sector, ii) the main variables reported as discriminant were: number and weight of seeds and less than 50% of the accessions have been genetically characterized iii) the main producing provinces of Nacional type cocoa in Ecuador are Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos and Esmeraldas and iv) the clones INIAP-EETP-800 and INIAP-EETP-801, with 2. 5 and 2 t/ha/year, respectively, have reported higher yields than clone CCN51. This review aims to raise awareness among the cocoa sector and consumers about the importance of maintaining this important genetic resource. |

Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática de literatura desde 1937 hasta 2022 en bases de datos científicas, como Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, Latindex. Además, se recopilaron documentos en repositorios de universidades e institutos de investigación nacionales e internacionales. Para el análisis de la información se realizaron estadísticas descriptivas y multivariantes. La revisión sistemática realizada permite concluir que: i) los recursos genéticos de este tipo de cacao son muy importantes para el sector cacaotero, ii) las principales variables reportadas como discriminantes fueron: número y peso de semillas y menos del 50% de las accesiones han sido caracterizadas genéticamente iii) las principales provincias productoras de cacao tipo Nacional en Ecuador son Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos y Esmeraldas y iv) los clones INIAP-EETP-800 e INIAP-EETP-801, con 2.5 y 2 t/ha/año, respectivamente, han reportado rendimientos superiores al clon CCN51. La presente revisión pretende concientizar al sector cacaotero y consumidor sobre la importancia de mantener este importante recurso genético.A fim de coletar informações relacionadas ao cacau tipo nacional, a seguinte revisão aborda i) importância do cacau no Equador, ii) bancos de germoplasma e caracterização de genótipos de cacau tipo nacional, iii) principais áreas de produção e iv) materiais recomendados para os diferentes áreas de produção. Uma busca sistemática da literatura foi realizada de 1937 a 2022 em bases de dados científicas, como Scopus, Scielo, Redalyc, Latindex. Além disso, foram coletados documentos em repositórios de universidades e institutos de pesquisa nacionais e internacionais. Para a análise das informações, foi realizada estatística descritiva e multivariada. A revisão sistemática realizada permite concluir que: i) os recursos genéticos deste tipo de cacau são muito importantes para o setor cacaueiro, ii) as principais variáveis apontadas como discriminantes foram: número e peso de sementes e menos de 50% de os acessos foram caracterizados geneticamente iii) as principais províncias produtoras de cacau tipo Nacional no Equador são Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos e Esmeraldas e iv) os clones INIAP-EETP-800 e INIAP-EETP-801, com 2,5 e 2 t/ ha/ano, respectivamente, relataram rendimentos superiores ao clone CCN51.
