Descrição
Resumo:This study was carried out to find out whether the use of task-based activities in the reading lesson helps students of fifth course at Luis Cordero High School develop their reading skills of skimming, scanning, inferring, deducing meaning from context, and identifying reference words. A group of 40 students, aged 15 and 16, were the participants of this four month study. The reading topics were selected by taking into account the students interests. Reading tasks were designed and adapted according to the students language level in order to arouse a sense of achievement in completing the tasks, rather than one of disappointment. In order to gather data, a reading comprehension pre-test and post-test was taken before and after the study, together with two questionnaires, respectively. The scores obtained in the pre-test and post-test were compared statistically. To sum up, results achieved in the post-test demonstrated that the use of task-based reading activities in the English class meant a significant improvement of the students reading ability, which implies the development of the reading skills.
