description Background: HIV continues to be one of the biggest problems for global public health. Objective: To determine the perception about HIV / AIDS in the users who attend the Basic Hospital of Limones, Esmeraldas province. Method: A mixed type, cross- sectional study was carried out, with a descriptive scope to measure the level of knowledge and risk practices that predispose to the transmission of the virus, through a questionnaire and an observation guide. The sample was 96 users who came for their attention. Results: 86% said they knew what HIV / AIDS was, 81% knew the ways of transmission; Signs and symptoms are known by 78%, the causal agent by 68% and prevention measures by 86%. The Internet and television were established as the main means of information. Regarding the practices that increase the risk of transmission, 12% said they had between 2 to 4 sexual partners and 7% more than 5. Regarding the use of condoms, 59% said they used it sometimes and 17% said they never use them and 68% have started their sex life in ages between 15 to 18 years. Conclusion: It was determined that the population studied has knowledge about the subject, but there are risk factors that increase the vulnerability of infection more frequently in adolescents and in the male sex. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen preventive measures and educational campaigns to reduce the transmission of HIV / AIDS.
