Sumario:Older adults are vulnerable to different risks, among them the nutritional one, their early identification prevents complications and deterioration of the quality of life, an analytical study with a quantitative approach was conducted, non-experimental cross-sectional of correlational scope, in the Planning Area 7 of Ecuador in 2016; which general objective was: to determine the protective and risk factors in the nutritional status of the older adult in the zone 7 of Ecuador. The universe was of 88 222 older adults, reference established for the year 2016, the sample was probabilistic by clusters computationally determined by EPI INFO 7 program conditioned by an expected frequency of 50%, confidence limit of 5% confidence level of 95%, Design defect of 0.1 and 1 cluster per province giving a total sample of 1 146 elderly adults; by distributing them in each of the provinces of the zone. It was collected information regarding family and nutritional aspects, using the FFSIL and MNA scales. The compiled information was deposited in the SPSS version 16 statistical processor, applying the percentage method as the case may be, the non-parametric Chi2 test, to establish the correlation between the variables and to record statistical association it was considered the V Cramer. Key words: older adult, vulnerable, risk, malnutrition, aging.
