In addition, dioecious species show marked differences in their energy requirements related to reproduction, but little information is available about the role of shape and allometry on differential acquisition of energy between the sexes. We studied the stem and crown dimensions of congeneric dioecious trees to determine if there are: (i) differences in the allometry between the sexes, (ii) different average sizes among sympatric species, and (iii) differences in stem and crown allometry between sympatric and allopatric species. Two pairs of sympatric Virola (Myristicaceae) in Brazil and Costa Rica were studied. SMA regression models were used to investigate allometric relationships between diameter at breast height (DBH) and tree height, and between DBH and crown volume (CV). No sexual dimorphism in stem and crown morphology was observed in this study, indicating that differences in resource allocation for reproduction between the sexes do not impact the stem and crown structure in these species. Overall, low variability among the species was observed. Only one species differed in stem allometry and none differed in crown allometry. CV differed between sympatric species. Stem and crown allometry are related to structural stability and our results support similar mechanical restriction for these species. The ecological significance of differences in CV among canopy species remains to be explored. The São Paulo Research Foundation/[03/12595-7]/FAPESP/BrazilThe São Paulo Research Foundation/[2009/50739-7]/FAPESP/BrazilConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico/[]/CNPq/BrazilUCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ciencias Básicas::Facultad de Ciencias::Escuela de Biologíaen_USacceso embargadohttp://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_f1cfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/embargoedAccessTrees, vol.30(6), pp.2041-2049reponame:Kérwáinstname:Universidad de Costa Ricainstacron:UCRCrown allometryCrown sizeMyristicaceaeSexual dimorphismStem allometryTree sizeVirolaStem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical treesartículo originalhttp://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_2df8fbb1info:eu-repo/semantics/articleORIGINALFernández Otárola, Sazima, Solferini - 2016 - Stem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical trees.pdfapplication/pdf657967https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/bitstreams/fad90ca8-cdb8-43a2-8fed-764994e77dcc/downloaded316ac3ac4f6d9e0a0de9d31b6ab0daMD51LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-80https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/bitstreams/8da3e9cc-7180-47e6-8676-d409d12abf23/downloadd41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427eMD52SWORD600772008.zipSWORD deposit packageapplication/octet-stream346081https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/bitstreams/22914cc0-612a-4800-b277-a1538e441aab/download46efafa7444568d785a0136d06436d98MD53TEXTFernández Otárola, Sazima, Solferini - 2016 - Stem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical trees.pdf.txtFernández Otárola, Sazima, Solferini - 2016 - Stem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical trees.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain38923https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/bitstreams/002ba2d6-0d78-4ce8-9363-357ddbd73763/download7b0ce2d386c8af08ac51af54c0b9063cMD54THUMBNAILFernández Otárola, Sazima, Solferini - 2016 - Stem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical trees.pdf.jpgFernández Otárola, Sazima, Solferini - 2016 - Stem and crown allometry in four congeneric species of dioecious tropical trees.pdf.jpgGenerated Thumbnailimage/jpeg5116https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/bitstreams/5884a88f-4a2e-4ff2-9c57-b7c8c651db50/download5fe14154b8f396865395f3e585c78071MD5510669/804892021-04-14 08:39:49.924embargo2150-02-01oai:kerwa.ucr.ac.cr:10669/80489https://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.crInstitucionalhttp://www.kerwa.ucr.ac.crUniversidadhttp://www.ucr.ac.crhttps://kerwa.ucr.ac.cr/oai/requestmeilyn.garro@ucr.ac.crCosta RicaNo aplicaNo aplicaNo aplicaopendoar:18712025-03-29T18:12:46.243Kérwá - Universidad de Costa Ricafalse |
