In August and November 2012, two hydrographic surveys were conducted in the coastal region of the Southern Caribbean of Costa Rica, between the Port of Limon and Gandoca Lagoon. A CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth profiler) was used at 43 stations to determine temperature, salinity and chlorophyll-a. It was determined that spatial and temporary variations of surface temperature were small, with values ranging between 28.6°C and 30°C. In addition, surface salinity ranged between 33.3 and 35.2 PSU and the average spatial distribution of chlorophyll-a concentration in surface waters was 0.64 mg m-3, with maximum and minimum values of 1.1 mg m-3 and 0.19 mg m-3, respectively. The vertical temperature field was characterized by a warm mixed layer (T ~ 29°C), which extended to 60 m deep in November and less than 10 m deep in August. During the two sampled months, from the vertical structure of the isotherms, we found a cyclonic motion (from the surface to 15 m deep) in the region adjacent to Cahuita, and an anticyclonic motion at 20 m in August and 40 m in November. We identified water masses present in the water column to the depths sampled: CSW, 0-80 m and SSW, > 80 m. |

Se utilizó un CTD (perfilador de conductividad, temperatura y profundidad) en 43 estaciones para determinar la temperatura, salinidad y clorofila-a. Se encontró que las variaciones espaciales y temporales de la temperatura superficial fueron pequeñas, y los valores se ubicaron entre 28.6°C y 30°C. Asimismo, el rango de salinidades superficiales estuvo entre 33.3 y 35.2 UPS, y la distribución espacial de las concentraciones de clorofila-a en las aguas superficiales presentó un valor promedio de 0.64 mg m-3, con un valor máximo de 1.1 mg m-3 y un mínimo de 0.19 mg m-3. El campo vertical de temperatura se caracterizó por mostrar una capa de mezcla cálida (T ~ 29°C) en ambos meses de muestreo, la cual se extendió hasta los 60 m de profundidad en noviembre y menos de 10 m de profundidad en agosto. En ambos meses de muestreo a partir de la estructura vertical de las isotermas, se encontró un movimiento ciclónico (desde la superficie y hasta los 15 m de profundidad) en la región frente a Cahuita, y un movimiento anticiclónico a partir de los 20 m de profundidad en agosto, y 40 m de profundidad en noviembre. Do mesmo modo, a faixa de salinidades superficiais esteve entre 33.3 e 35.2 UPS e a distribuição espacial das concentrações de clorofila-a nas águas superficiais apresentou um valor médio de 0.64 mg m-3, com um valor máximo de 1.1 mg m-3 e um mínimo de 0.19 mg m-3. O campo vertical de temperatura caracterizou-se por mostrar uma capa de mescla cálida (T ~ 29°C) em ambos os meses de amostragem, que se estendeu até os 60 m de profundidade em novembro e menos de 10 m de profundidade em agosto. Em ambos os meses de amostragem, a partir da estrutura vertical das isotermas, encontrou-se um movimento ciclônico (desde a superfície e até os 15 m de profundidade) na região frente a Cahuita, e um movimento anticíclico a partir dos 20 m de profundidade em agosto, e 40 m de profundidade em novembro.
