Some intraspecific adaptive variation is apparent as to length and width of the carapace and coloration, the San Carlos crabs being darker than those from the Nicaraguan lake region. No other major diferences were found between the two populations, which have not as yet become entirely separated from each other.Un estudio realizado en las llanuras de San Carlos, en el norte de Costa Rica, indica que el cangrejo de agua dulce Potamocarcinus nicaraguensis se ha extendido por la región usando inicialmente el sistema del Río San Carlos. Al hacerlo, P. nicaraguensis ha desarrollado alguna variabilidad intraespecífica, principalmente en cuanto a longitud y anchura del caparazón y a la coloración. Los cambios sufridos se consideran una respuesta adaptativa importante durante la L, Ionización de un habitat diferente.
