description Vale la pena recordar, que en Colombia la demanda de mercurio para el periodo comprendido entre el 2009-2013, alcanzó un total de 529.048,59 kg, mientras que la oferta hacia el Perú alcanzó solamente 998 kg; de otro lado se puede afirmar que Colombia no es un País productor de mercurio, todo lo contrario se importan de distintos países productores de éste metal, convirtiéndolo de esta manera en un País importador de primer plano; en lo concerniente con los resultados encontrados se observa el siguiente panorama: teniendo en cuenta las proyecciones de2014, Colombia ha triplicado la producción de oro y por ende el uso del mercurio ha venido creciendo en forma vertiginosa, pues se estima, según la Sinopsis Nacional de la Minería Aurífera Artesanal y de Pequeña Escala (2012), que a 2013, el consumo de mercurio creció en un 127 % con respecto al año 2011, es decir en tres años. Esto es algo sorprendente, puesto que el grado de contaminación y de afectación de la población también se ha extendido, todo por efectos colaterales del uso del mercurio en las explotaciones mineras legal o ilegal. Lo antes expuesto permite inferir que a medida que se siga importando mercurio, sin que haya necesidad de producirlo, los daños ambientales siguen latente y su curso no se detiene, sino que cada vez van en ascenso, su crecimiento es vertiginoso e insostenible, tanto en la salud de miles de personas y de otros seres vivos como animales y vegetales.
