Respiratory viral infections in pediatrics: generalities about physiopathogeny, diagnosis and clinical outcomes

Acute respiratory infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric population. These includes a varied group of pathologies with a wide clinical spectrum, some of these mild, affecting only the upper respiratory tract and some others very severe affecting the lower respirato...

These includes a varied group of pathologies with a wide clinical spectrum, some of these mild, affecting only the upper respiratory tract and some others very severe affecting the lower respiratory tract and threatening life. Its etiology is diverse, but viruses are the most common cause in more than 50% of all cases but bacteria and fungi are also involved. Diagnosis is mainly clinical so it is important to be familiarized with signs and symptoms to make an opportune diagnosis and to know the pathophysiology to better understand these entities. Finally, there are many complications and sequels that can occur after suffering and acute respiratory infection so it is vital to know them to detect them on time and intervene in an opportune way during the follow up. In this article all these aspects will be review having as purpose to offer clear and actualized information to health personnel to help their daily actuation. MÉD.UIS. 2015;28(1):133-141.Keywords: Respiratory syncytial virus. Metapneumovirus. Bronchiolitis. Pneumonia. Asthma.
