Sumario:Evaluation of diluents for cooling rabbit semen (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and their effect on sperm quality and fertility The domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a species from which meat with great nutritional qualities is obtained, although in Colombia its production and consumption are low, compared to other countries, and its reproductive management is carried out in a traditional way. The objective of this research was to evaluate diluents for the refrigeration of rabbit semen and its effect on sperm quality and fertility. 30 semen samples were obtained from 10 sexually mature rabbits. Each sample was diluted 1:10 in four diluents, composed of: skim milk and sugars (T1); dextrose, sodium citrate, and potassium acetate (T2); sodium, phosphate and sugar caseinates (T3); and tris-citric acid and egg yolk (T4). The semen was kept at 16 ° C for 72 hours. At the time of dilution and every 24 hours, total mobility (MT), progressive motility (MP), sperm kinetics and subpopulation distribution were evaluated with the Sperm Class Analizer® system, and viability and morphology using staining. with eosin-nigrosin. It was found that the T1 and T3 diluents more efficiently protected the sperm, also favored the optimal values of the speeds (curvilinear, rectilinear and average) and the lateral amplitude of the head (ALH) in each of the subpopulations found, for this reason, the females were inseminated using these two diluents, from which a 65% positivity was obtained on palpation. It is concluded that the diluents composed for skim milk or caseinates, and sugars, favor the sperm quality of rabbit semen, being considered appropriate for artificial insemination.
